Do you see your steely resolve of embracing a healthier life this year diminishing a bit already? But that turkey, the mulled wine and the numerous mince pies you hogged on during the holidays is still lying somewhere in your belly and you see yourself pushing yourself to the gym class. Don't push, just sweat. Surprised?
The answer is Bikram Yoga and in London's So Hot Bikram Yoga. Yoga is a seriously hot business, with two studios, one in Soho and one in Victoria, they are clearly heating up the fitness scene in the city.
Adapted from the traditional Hatha Yoga, it is a school of yoga devised by Indian yoga guru Bikram Chaudhary. The sessions run for exactly 90 minutes and consist of a series of 26 poses and two breathing exercises. It is practised in a heated room (41 degree Celsius approximately) with 40% humidity. The heat helps in loosening the joints and deeper stretching; the obvious sweating has an amazing detoxifying effect.
While you are contouring your body into a camel, bow or rabbit, you see your concentration improving with every breath till you reach a state of complete Zen. While I am no stranger to yoga, just 15 minutes into the practice and I could feel even my shins and feet sweating. It was hard to imagine that we were in London amidst a cold, tricky winter. Although within half an hour, I was seriously cursing the heat I felt my pores opening and thanking me. It would not be a stretch of imagination when I say that I felt the toxins slowly leaving my body.
Let's do the rabbit
