20 Fenchurch Street stands tall. Also known as the walkie talkie building, it's become famed for being one of London's premier skyline views. Have your ticket at the ready as you queue up, along with ID and be ready to pass through security. Though the lines often appear long, they're efficient and with plenty of staff on hand helping with the process. Once you're in the lift, be ready for a surprise.
As the lift reaches the top, you don't expect much, perhaps because all you've seen is a small reception area and the inside of a lift; but the doors slide open and the light floods in from the Sky Garden's wall-length, ceiling-height glass front. Come rain or shine, you've come to the right place.
Beautifully designed gardens, observations desks and a restaurant/ bar welcome you to the top. The City Garden Bar serves a variety of beverages, including cocktails, breakfast items, cakes and snacks whilst you also have the options of the Fenchurch Restaurant, Darwin Brasserie and Sky Pod Bar. The observation deck, though outside, has a roof as well as a fairly high wall, so it's a great place to view the city from the outside regardless of the weather.
The gardens range from shrubs to potted plants and flowers. Sunken into beds, climbing over the walls and decorating the stairs, the gardens are on both main floors of the garden. It's therefore a wonderful place to view the horticulture against the 360° views of the city.
"Inspired by the gravity defying ancient forests you see on tall outcrops, Sky Garden is a unique public garden space housed under a glass vaulted roof overlooking the City of London. The particular microclimate created under this glass vault inspired the creation of a series of micro-landscapes." - Gillespies (The garden's designers)
It may also be a good idea to look at the variety of events that happen at the Sky Garden, many of which are book-only events such as their live music sessions and yoga and breakfast sessions.
It's free to visit, though spaces are limited and it's therefore better to book a free ticket online prior. If you do turn up on the day, there is a chance that you will be turned away if the space is full, however they do try and secure you a ticket.
