Shilpa Gupta is putting on something rather intriguing in Rochdale, a sound installation that's less about a formal lecture and more about a giant ear-hug. She's been having a good natter with various local communities, including our newer neighbours who've arrived from all corners of the globe, to gather their stories. Picture this: people were asked if they'd left their heart somewhere, or if there's a thought that just won't budge from their brain. Turns out, a fair few did, and they shared what was on their minds through drawings and words.
These personal reflections then found their way to some brilliant local songwriters, who spun them into verses across a fantastic array of languages – everything from Ukrainian to Urdu, Portuguese, Cantonese, and even a dash of good old English. Then, a whole chorus of voices from within the communities and beyond brought these lyrical gems to life. The whole shebang promises to be a beautiful auditory tapestry, a real earworm that subtly reminds us how we're all just walking, talking scrapbooks of our memories and experiences. It's an invitation to simply soak it all in, no need for an academic deep dive, just a chance to let your mind wander and perhaps see yourself and others in a slightly different light. This unique experience is open to visit from July 4 to July 20, 2025.
