Sheriff Lodge is located at the south east edge of the Peak District, England in a little town called Matlock. The venue is located on top of a hill with stunning views of Derbyshire's countryside.
This is hands down, one of the best Bed and Breakfast venues I have been to in England. We were lucky enough to have a room available to us on the last Bank holiday weekend of 2014 and thank god we did. Arriving shortly after 10:30pm we easily were able to allocate our room, which was lush and comfortable, clean yet homely and cosy.
You will be happy to know that this establishment is an award-winning bed and breakfast and all rooms offers en suite accommodation, free Wi-Fi, free private parking and a lush garden with seating, perfect to read the morning paper or relaxing with a cup of Earl Grey.
Another plus for animal lovers is that pets are welcome in one of the guest rooms that is The Family Room.
There are five rooms available to rent at
Sheriff Lodge and each of the rooms has a stunning views across the valley to
Riber Castle (19th-century Grade II listed country house situated in the hamlet of Riber on a hill overlooking Matlock, Derbyshire). Each of the beds have luxurious Egyptian cotton covers (this was a first for me and I don't know if I can ever go back) and are teamed with microfiber pillows to eliminate raising any allergies.
The rooms are also decked with hospitality trays, adorned with teas, coffees, hot chocolate and Horlicks. There is also a hairdryer, iron and ironing board in each room.
All rooms at
Sheriff Lodge feature a flat-screen TV, tea/coffee making facilities and a desk. All the en suite bathrooms are equipped with free toiletries. One of the best items I found was a box containing all those little items that one would forget to bring, such as lady products, makeup-removal wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, cotton buds, razors, scissors and other useful trinkets. This was fantastic as sharing a room with two girls, I realised that I did in fact forget my toothbrush.
Another aspect that adds great character to the venue is the uniquely themed rooms. There is The Mousehole, The Dray, The Loft, The Nest and The Warren. Each has its own interior that features notions to the rooms name.
The next morning we came down for a restaurant style breakfast and were pleasantly surprised of the variety available at the B&B. Not only did they cater for gluten intolerant residents, but they also provided local and English options for their guests. The items ranged from a full Derbyshire breakfast of local free-range eggs, Derbyshire oatcakes and home made bread that Alan makes every morning with a selection of gourmet condiments. The breakfast doesn't stop there, with the options of sausages, hash browns and black pudding to name a few.
Beyond satisfied after only being there for less than 24 hours, we decided to check out what Matlock had on offer. The famous
Chatsworth House, home to the Duke and Dutchess of Devonshire, made the cut.
Upon arriving back to the venue in the late afternoon we decided to venture to the local pub, the
Sycamore Inn, which was recommended by Alan and Kate as they do top notch pub grub at an affordable price.
Sheriff Lodge has catered for dinner for some guests, specifically older women who don't like to venture out into the dark in the winter months, however have agreed to eliminate this option as the local pub provides a nice meal if one is after a feed. Also, getting out and about and exploring the country town is what it is all about.
If you are looking for things to do at
Sheriff Lodge there is a selection of board games, chess, TV, DVD's and some snacks to get you through the afternoon. You are free to curl up on the couch or enjoy the entertainment in the privacy of your own room.
Sheriff Lodge is run by Kate, a former Nursing Sister, Alan a serving Fire Officer and their daughter Gemma. The family bought the lodge back in 2001 and have worked very had to make it an award winning establishment. They have won many awards, two stand outs being the 'Best Breakfast' award and 'Best Guest House' award from www.enjoyEngland.com.
The service and atmosphere at
Sheriff Lodge is truly impeccable and the guest house pays true homage to quality. If you are keen to visit Chatsworth House or the Derbyshire area, do yourself a favour and stay at Sheriff Lodge, it will exceed your expectations.
