A whole host of gardening programmes on television have led to an understandable surge in interest in all things plants and flowers.

And that has inevitably led to an increase in interest with huge garden centres now to be found in most towns, cities and even villages around the country.

Despite the start of Spring still being quite some way away, I took the opportunity to visit the impressive which lies just yards from the M6 Toll motorway near the cathedral city of Lichfield.

Its setting, in the middle of beautiful Staffordshire countryside, makes this an even more enjoyable garden centre to visit, even during the cold winter months.

But despite the winter season meaning that little is going on in the garden, there is still plenty to see at , which began life as a family owned business but is now in the Wyevale camp.

Open seven days a week, the Shenstone centre has long been renowned for its home-grown bedding plants, and there was certainly no shortage on display when I visited.

But, despite the focus clearly being on flowers, shrubs, and trees of all description, as well as a vast array of gardening products, there is almost a small shopping centre feel about this place.

Retail units range from shoes and other forms of clothing to pottery, Jacuzzis and even travel goods, while visitors can also put their feet up and relax over a cuppa or something to eat at the garden centre restaurant.

And as an added incentive, the restaurant's winter menu offers customers a special offer of two main meals for just £12 through until March 15, although this excludes Sunday roasts and jacket potatoes.

Facilities also include a children's soft play area, Wi-Fi access, and the availability of plant experts to answer visitors' questions on a variety of horticultural matters.

In fact green-fingered youngsters will also be catered for during the upcoming half-term holiday, with a Little Diggers Wildlife Week between February 15 and 19. Children's events during the week include a Pollination Station, Little Bug Bakery and an opportunity to Decorate Your Own Bird Box.
