Mental health comedienne Sheila McMahon is heading back on stage with a new show this autumn. Entitled Guilt, Sheila’s 2023 show will see her perform her unique mix of stand-up comedy and mental health education at the Garrick Theatre in Lichfield, Staffordshire, on Saturday, October 7, at 7.45pm. The show has been timed to run just ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10. Sheila, who performed at last year’s Glastonbury Festival, said: “In my usual style, the audience can expect to have a great laugh with me and leave with a smile on their face having learnt a few things about mental health along the way!”

News of the show comes hot on the heels of Sheila, who is a qualified mental health counsellor and CEO of Mind Management For You, completing an inspirational challenge that saw her face a fear to help to tackle suicide in the UK. In October 2021, Sheila delivered a talk on mental health to her partner’s motorbike club – the Lichfield Advanced Motorbike Group (LAMG). Having worked throughout the outbreak, Sheila was mindful that more people were experiencing suicidal thoughts and she wanted to encourage the LAMG bikers to watch her free 10-minute video on ‘How can I help someone who has suicidal thoughts’.

Knowing that the topic of suicide could be an uncomfortable watch for some, and that Sheila was asking them to step out their comfort zone, she was prepared to do the same. So, she set them a challenge - if they watched her video, she would conquer her fears and learn how to ride a motorbike. The prospect of her first lesson caused a long-buried trauma - that of being involved in a car crash - to resurface. Despite this, Sheila completed her Compulsive Basic Training and went on to graduate to qualifying to riding big bikes while donning her trademark hi vis vest that reads Suicide, it’s time to get talking aimed at helping to inspire her to keep going.

Her free video on ‘How can I help someone who has suicidal thoughts’, continues to inspire while racking up 350 views to date – which is 250 more than at the start of her motorbike challenge. Now Sheila hopes that by sharing her story, she might inspire even more people to watch her 10-minute video and potentially save lives.
