See Southampton are offering a special walk supporting the Nuffield Southampton Theatre's premiere production of
The Shadow Factory . Running on Wednesdays and Saturdays from February 17th until March 3rd,
the Shadow Factory Woolston Walk will explore some local sites important to the production of the
Supermarine Spitfires during World War II.
In the 1940's, Southampton's major Supermarine Spitfire factories were destroyed in German bombing raids. As a result, 'shadow factories' sprung up all over the city. Places like auto shops and car manufacturers took over production, with the components for the Spitfire's being created all over the city. As many of the city's men were away at war, women made up a significant portion of the factories' workforce. The stories behind the people who worked in these factories, and who tried to keep things together back home, are the basis for the NST's production The Shadow Factory and they've also inspired this See Southampton Walk.
The walk begins that
Woolston Millenium Garden , by the giant metal feather sculpture, and has a duration of approximately 90 minutes. the walk will cover some of the important locations that made the Spitfire production possible and it will also explore some of the stories behind the people involved with the war effort in Southampton. If you're planning on seeing The Shadow Factory at NST after the walk, there is plenty of time to get there via bus or car.
