If you love real tea: those leaves that need to marry with boiling water in a teapot and infuse until they are properly brewed, and if you appreciate good coffee: those shiny brown beans that should be correctly ground and then prepared using the appropriate machine, you should make a visit to
Rosie & Java in Richmond a top priority. You will find this boutique for baristas and tea brewers next door to William Curley's pastry and chocolate shop in Richmond's Paved Court.
Rob and Alison Armes have been selling their products from the shop for four years, but have thirty five years of tea and coffee experience in the area. If you normally restrict your tea and coffee intake to bags in boxes and granular brown stuff in jars, the range of teas and coffees will awaken both your senses and your sense of adventure. The coffee beans are dispensed from brass containers along one wall,
whilst the teas along the facing wall, whether black, green, white, oolong or flowering, will tempt you to experiment with different flavours.
Rob and Alison are there to advise and recommend, not to pressure sell. The Assam tea that Rob suggested was pronounced perfect by my husband, he who likes his beverage strong and deep brown. We've yet to sample the dark espresso blend that I brought home, but the aroma was enough to make me buy it.
Once you've chosen your perfect tea or coffee you can browse the accessories. There are cups and saucers, teapots and tea caddies and coffee making equipment and machinery. If you feel completely inspired you can even book for a barista training day.
Details of all products are available from the website if you can't manage a trip to Richmond.
