A primary school in Staffordshire is joining in the UK-wide celebrations to mark Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next year.
Charnwood Primary School in Lichfield was chosen to plant a tree to commemorate the royal milestone in 2022. Charnwood is one of 69 schools from cities throughout the UK to be chosen to plant a 'school celebration tree' donated by the
Queen's Green Canopy initiative. This is the first part in a programme of activities around tree planting to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next year. The event marks the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne in February 1952. The tree at Charnwood Primary was officially planted by the Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Ian Dudson, in front of pupils, teachers and dignitaries from across the district and county. The tree in question is an Acer Campestre.
The Lord-Lieutenant said: "
The Staffordshire Lieutenancy is proud to support The Queen's Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty The Queen's 70 years of service to the nation. The tree will be recorded on The Queen's Green Canopy Map as a lasting legacy in Lichfield of the Platinum Jubilee. These plantings are intended to inspire young people to take a deeper interest in the natural environment and associate themselves with trees and all the benefits they provide." Katie Stanley, Head Teacher at Charnwood Primary School, commented: "
It is such an honour to be chosen as the site for the jubilee tree, and we will take good care of it at the school. We will also be incorporating aspects of the event into our curriculum and I know the pupils are all thrilled to be a part of this historic event."
Councillor Barry Gwilt, Chair of Lichfield District Council, said: "
This is a great way to start the celebrations to mark the Queen's 70-year-long reign. It is part of a project that invites people across the United Kingdom to 'plant a tree for the jubilee' from October 2021 to the end of 2022. We hope plenty of people across Lichfield District will rise to the challenge and get planting!"
