The Queens Head Pub, Wednesbury has had a refurbishment in the last twelve months and new managers.
So, for Valentine's Day (also my wedding anniversary), my husband and I tried it out. They did have a three-course Valentine's menu with a choice of starters and mains and desserts, but we're not big eaters, so we chose from the regular menu.
At first look we were a bit disappointed at the choice of mains – we're both not curry eaters (unless I make it at home), and my husband doesn't eat anything spicy, so faced with two curries and three chilli dishes there wasn't much else apart from beer-battered fish, scampi or lasagne. But then we turned the page, and to our relief found choices from the grill: steaks, gammon, chicken burgers – my husband choice and 8oz rib-eye steak, which was cooked perfectly (medium). I had American-style chicken fillet with a crispy coating and home-made tomato relish on the side and two onion rings cooked perfectly accompanied with a lovely jacket potato obviously oven-cooked and not microwaved, as the skin was dark and crispy – just how I like it.
Both meals were delicious and reasonably priced, the steak was £10.95, and the chicken was £5.95 – and nicely presented (oblong and square plates). They serve roast meals on Sunday (check price) and £7.95 for two courses, and they have a choice of desserts and sides also on the menu.
The Mother's Day menu looks lovely – slow roast beef in red wine gravy, and roast pork/chicken, as well as a choice of starters and desserts, and that's only £12.95 all home-made; I doubt you can get that value in nice surroundings like that at a better price – my mouth was watering just reading the menu. It is advisable to book for Mother's Day I think it will fill up quickly.
They also do pensioners specials and sandwiches and baguettes and jacket potatoes, so if you fancy trying somewhere new give it a try I doubt you'll be disappointed.
