So, a scientist walks into a bar...
Sounds like the beginning of a really lame joke doesn't it? But in fact it is a true story. And to be more accurate, the line should read 'two hundred and seventy scientists walk into a bar'. Or at least they will do, for between the 19th - 21st May, all the geniuses of Britain will be popping in to local pubs around London to give talks about all things sciencey. Genius idea, huh? I mean, if they want to get people to listen to what they have to say, where better place to go? It is a far more interesting place to go than a lecture theatre, wouldn't you say? Just think about it, where would you rather be?
A Pint of Science is a non-profit organisation that takes out all the jargon, and makes science accessible to the curious, but average joe like you and me.
With new discoveries being made all the time, it can be difficult to keep up, especially if you're not a science geek who knows all the ins and outs of particle physics. A Pint of Science is the chance to meet professors and researchers in a relaxed environment as they give talks, answer questions, and explain wide variety of topics. There will be games, quizzes, and of course, beer.
Tickets are £2 per talk, and highlights include guest speakers such as comedian,
Lieven Scheire , who will be giving a particle-uary funny talk on particle physics at the Water Poet on the 19th May.
Professor Molly Stevens will be at Union Bar, Imperial College on the 19th May. She will discuss
DesigningMaterials to Heal the Body . The Hoop & Troy in Kensington will see science journalist,
Alok Jha , recounting his travels to east Antarctica, and oceanographer, Helen Czerski, will explain how ocean bubbles affect the planet at The Lucas Arms.
There will be many more speakers, and are several fields of study to choose from, including Matters of the Mind', 'Understanding our Bodies', 'Chemistry & Physics', and 'Planet Earth'.
Pints of Science is taking place in cities across the UK, including Manchester, York, Oxford, Cambridge, Glasgow, Bristol & Bath; click here for details:www.pintofscience.com
