Stephen Fry and Joanna Lumley join star-studded online show
Actors including Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry and Russell Tovey have been announced in the cast for the upcoming digital adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. Along with Alfred Enoch and Emma McDonald, they join the already announced Fionn Whitehead in the cast of the show which will be available to stream in March.
A modern take on the classic novel, Fionn Whitehead takes the lead role of Dorian, a social media influencer – but behind the perfect image lies a darker story. From the creative team behind the critically acclaimed What a Carve Up!, the show is written by Henry Filloux-Bennett and directed by Tamara Harvey. It brings together elements of radio play, film and documentary with traditional theatrical techniques in an online digital theatre experience.
Director Tamara Harvey said: "When trying to tell stories in Covid times, with very few resources and almost no time, the thing you need from your cast more even than talent is a spirit of collaboration, combined with patience, kindness and large doses of humour. Every member of our cast for Dorian Gray brought that and more. They are not only ridiculously talented but also – perhaps even more importantly – they're all genuinely lovely people, which has made the making of this piece a joy."
Screened on March 16-31, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a co-production by Barn Theatre, Lawrence Batley Theatre, New Wolsey Theatre, Oxford Playhouse & Theatr Clwyd. Tickets cost £12 for a link to the production and a digital programme. Closed captioning will be available for all dates during the run, with audio description available from 23-31 March.
Education packs, which will be packaged with performance links at £100 per school/group, are also available for the production. For tickets and more information see www.pictureofdoriangray.com
