Penguins is a charming family theatre show based on the real-life story of two male penguins at Central Park Zoo. Aimed at audiences 3 years and over, this is a family performance that adults and children can both enjoy. Penguins will be at the Theatre Royal Winchester on Monday 19th February for three shows. The play is presented by Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Prime Theatre and Cahoots NI, and also forms part of the program for 2018's Hampshire Pride.
Roy and Silo are real-life two male Chinstrap penguins from New York's Central Park Zoo. They made headlines back in the late 90s when zookeepers noticed that the pair were performing penguin mating rituals with each other. After the penguins tried, unsuccessfully, to hatch an egg shaped rock, the zookeepers ended up giving them an actual penguin egg that another couple had been unable to hatch.
Roy and Silo are the stars of Penguins. They're always together, just like all the other penguin pairs at the zoo. The two are inseparable: walking, swimming and even dancing together. Like the other penguin pairs, the two decide to hatch an egg together, and when their rock is replaced with a real penguin egg they may actually get the chance to become parents.
Penguins deals with themes of friendship, family and identity. It's not focussed on pushing a political message, it just tells the story of two penguins and explores the reality that families have more than just one shape and size. It tells this story through a combination of theatre and dance and some mesmerising scenes.
Regular tickets are £10. Families and groups are discounted to £9 per person and school groups are discounted to £7 per person. Tickets can be purchased online through the Theatre Royal Winchester website or by calling the box office on 01962 840 440.
Penguins has three performances on Monday 19th February at 1:30pm, 4pm and 6:30pm. It is recommended for families and children 3 years and older.
