Former Strangelove frontman,
Patrick Duff , will present an evening of words and music at
The Kitchen Garden in Kings Heath, Birmingham, on June 5, 2023.
The 56-year-old will read extracts from his recently published autobiography,
The Singer, and perform music spanning his whole career.
Strangelove were an alternative rock band, formed in Bristol in 1991, comprising singer Patrick, guitarists Alex Lee and Julian Poole, bassist Joe Allen and John Langley on drums. They released two EPs and three critically acclaimed albums before disbanding in 1998.
Patrick then formed the short-lived band, Moon, which performed a handful of gigs in England and released one single. Patrick subsequently spent two years living in a forest outside Bristol, a move which he explains he did out of fear, and the shame of "not being 'somebody' anymore".
He was discovered in the forest by Thomas Brooman, the head of the WOMAD Festival, where he was asked to perform. At this festival, Patrick watched and met 81-year-old veteran South African master storyteller and musician,
Madosini , whom he would go to Langa, Cape Town, to live and write songs with. In 2003, they performed a number of successful concerts together around the world.
Patrick has released five solo albums,
Luxury Problems (2005),
The Mad Straight Road (2010),
Visions of the Underworld (2013),
Seven Sermons To The Dead (2013) and
Leaving My Father's House (2018), and is currently working on his sixth. His autobiography,
The Singer, chronicles his upbringing, his time in Strangelove, and his struggles with anxiety and depression.
