Southampton's biennial open submission exhibition is here for 2018, with the chosen theme of Four Seasons. Open Exhibition 2018: Four Seasons is an opportunity for artists all over Southampton and surrounding regions to submit their work for exhibition int he gallery. The exhibition runs from the 3rd of February till the 21st of April, 2018.
Submissions for the exhibition were opened in early 2017 to residents of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Dorset. These could include 2D or 3D works in any medium as well as multimedia entries. The previous Open Exhibition was held in 2016, with a theme 'A Sporting Life'. Coinciding with the 2016 Rio Olympic games, entrants were encouraged to take inspiration from the games and the many sporting activities and pastimes practised around the world.
This year, the theme called for a more directed look towards nature. Whether it's the changing of the seasons, the first frosts of winter, sunbathers in the park on a Summer's day, the four seasons provide plenty of potential subjects. Entrants were encouraged to be creative with the theme, exploring and interpreting it in whatever way they chose.
This exhibition is a collection of works submitted to the gallery by residents. These have been chosen by a panel of judges and they represent some of the best entries to the open exhibition. As well as these locally submitted works, the exhibition also features a selection of artworks from the Southampton City Art Gallery's collection that also fit within the four seasons theme.
The Southampton City Art Gallery has free admission to both the main gallery and to exhibitions. The gallery is open from 10am-3pm Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm Saturday, 10am-3pm Bank Holidays, and the gallery is closed on Sundays.
