When the sun finally arrives in London for the summer (and even when it doesn't) projection screens showcasing new film releases and nostalgic cinematic classics start to materialise throughout the city's open spaces. And now the al fresco intellectual fix has arrived.
The folks at the
British Museum have anticipated that on a rare sunny day a stuffy lecture theatre might be a little too stifling for all but the most die-hard of Jacobean theatre fans. As part of The British Museum's
'Shakespeare: Staging the world' exhibition they've thrown up a screen on the East Lawn so you can feel all clever absorbing old English prose in the open air, wine glass in one hand, ice cream in the other.
What's more, unlike some of its rivals they won't charge you the best part of thirty quid for a spot on bum-numbing cobblestones in potential driving rain (ahem, Somerset House). All screenings are free.
Catch the recent acclaimed BBC adaptation of
Henry V: The Hollow Crown (starring Tom Hiddleston, Mélanie Thierry, Julie Walters and John Hurt, directed by Thea Sharrock) on Friday 24th August at 6.30pm.
Gregory Doran's new adaptation of
Julius Caesar , recently filmed for BBC Four, is set in post-independence Africa featuring a celebrated all-black cast (Paterson Joseph, Cyril Nri, Jeffery Kisson and Ray Fearon) and can be viewed on 25th September at 8pm.
Tickets can be
booked online , but don't be deterred if they're sold out. The museum's frontage opens as normal. Wander down spontaneously and you'll find plenty of viewing spots outside the designated seating area.
