Online Event Launches New Human Rights Network

Human rights supporters are being invited to the free launch event of a new network of activists across the Central England region.

Aiming to encourage people from across the region to work together to bring about change, the Amnesty Central England Network is part of the global human rights organisation Amnesty International.

The online event “Universal Rights, Local Action” on Tuesday September 5 at 6.30-8.15pm is designed so people can find out more about being part of the Network. It will cover the initial campaigns and information about how to engage and will feature short talks, a Q&A session and a discussion.

Speakers include former Secretary of State for International Development Clare Short, who will talk about human rights abuses in Palestine and Amnesty UK CEO Sacha Deshmukh.

The evening will also feature poet Ian McMillan reading his verse, and former Afghanistan MP and AIUK Board member Ramazan Jumazada will share his experiences of fleeing Afghanistan and settling in the UK.

Experts from Amnesty will explain plans to promote anti-racism and a more just and humane approach to refugees and migrants.

Ian Myson, a Network organiser, said: “A lot of work has been undertaken by volunteer activists in the region over the last few months to get the Network to the position where we’re ready to launch. Flexibility is the key - people will be able to participate in the Network depending on the time, skills and resources they can commit. They’ll be contributing to a powerful and impactful movement to promote and defend human rights both in the UK and internationally.”

And he added the event is open to everyone. “All are welcome to come along to our online launch event, hear some brilliant speakers, and discover more about our future plans.”
