For months students at
the Petersfield School have been rehearsing for their 2018 musical production of
Oliver! The show opens at the
New Royal Theatre in Portsmouth on January 24th for four shows over three days.
Oliver! the musical is based on the book by Charles Dickens and has been adapted as a musical with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. The musical first premiered in the West End in 1960. It is a hugely popular musical for school performances, as the play features a large number of roles for young people, perfect for students. The musical tells the story of Oliver, a young orphan who lives in a workhouse before joining a street gang of pickpockets led by Artful Dodger. Life on the streets isn't always much better, but thankfully there's something brighter on the horizon for Oliver. There are lots of fun musical numbers that really show off the young cast's abilities.
The Petersfield School production is a collaboration between drama and music departments, with students on stage in singing and dancing roles and the school band providing the accompanying music.
Whether or not you're a parent or a member of the school community, this production is an opportunity to support young talent and community theatre productions.
