'Not a Selfie' Competition

People living in and around Tamworth in Staffordshire are being invited to get 'snap happy' and showcase their town by entering a photography competition aimed at highlighting its attractions. The Mayor of Tamworth is encouraging people to notice and celebrate the world around them as part of a new 'Not a Selfie' photographic competition on social media. As part of his mayoral year, Richard Kingstone is inviting people to share their images of the beautiful, the unique and the unusual in Tamworth, with the hashtags #notaselfie and #amazingtamworth .



The competition has only just been launched, but Richard has already received a number of photos which have been submitted to the mayoral Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. The idea is that each month, the Mayor will choose his favourite images and invite the winning snapper to join him for a celebration (and a prize!) in Tamworth Town Hall. Images will also be shared across social media. Richard said: "Social media is a great tool for communicating, but it can also present a very inward-looking view. I'd like to encourage people to take time to look at all the wonderful things there are to see, so I am opening up the Mayoral Facebook page, Twitter account and Instagram account and inviting people to post their images of what they see in and around Tamworth."



The current Mayor of Tamworth added: "The photos can be of anything - some of the wonderful buildings we have, people at play, people at work, anything – the more imaginative the better. Perhaps it's something no-one has ever seen before. As well as the hashtag #amazingtamworth , I also want people to use #notaselfie as one of the aims is to encourage the 'selfie generation' to look at the world around them as well. Photographs of what people see would be great, which could be anything from a bird visiting their back garden to a bacon sandwich." Richard said he had been "overwhelmed" by the initial response and had already received some "fantastic" images. "Thank you to all of those who have joined the fun, and to everyone else, please keep your #notaselfie pictures coming."



To take part in the competition, either upload your photos to social media and tag the Mayor's accounts, or email or message them directly.to [email protected].
