Nörjske is a Scandinavian deli & bar, (or maybe it's a Scandinavian bar & deli?), in leafy Edgbaston, Birmingham. Blink and you might miss it. Nörjske is dead opposite the Simpsons restaurant (yes, that Brum Michelin starred restaurant since 2004). I think Nörjske is worth a special visit just out of Birmingham City Centre; think as if heading to the Botanical Gardens and you'll be passing, because Nörjske feels like a hidden jem. Let me explain my thoughts.

Nörjske deli serves breakfasts, lunches, offers artisan breads, decent sausage, (local Brummie Lashford sausages anyone? Please form an orderly queue!), soups and proper loose leaf teas. They'll even deliver lunch for a £15 minimum. See the menu pictured.



At the front there's a covered patio, perfect for us dog walkers if you fancy stopping for a snack when you're out walking. If you have a dog, you'll know it can be so hard to grab a cuppa when you're out walking. This patio area is small but cosy, with patio heaters and if you're still a bit chilly, there's blankets to put over your knees. Sit and watch the world go by.

Upstairs Nörjske bar offers a good array of bottled beers, and Veltins is on draught, (Veltins German brewery in the city of Meschede-Grevenstein apparently, that ranks among Germany's best selling breweries), overlooking the majestic St George's Church, Edgbaston. Initially you think the bar's small but it's larger than first appears, but Nörjske bar manages to retain an intimacy, partly because of the decor. Now I'm no interior designer but I'd call Nörjske Scandinavian minimalist chic; lots of white and accents of deer, with stag cushions, furry skins and large floor to ceiling windows flooding in light. The Nörjske website describes this better than me, '...welcoming atmosphere and a Nordic twist', which I think's a pretty good description. You could be miles away from Birmingham.

If ur planning 'a bit of a do' Nörjske can be hired for private functions, for something that feels more personal than a bar in Birmingham City Centre. Having been invited along to a private event at Nörjske recently I thought their buffet was tasty. I particularly enjoyed their paella, huge chilli prawns and tortillas.

If I opened a deli & bar, I like to think it would be like Nörjske. Bright, airy and calming. Visit this weekend, or why wait for the weekend? You might think the same.
