Telling the story of a land girl and her wartime quest, No Finer Life is a production written by Graham Harvey with music by Alistair Collingwood. It will be performed at the Hanger Farm Arts Centre in Totton on Saturday the 22nd February 2018 as part of a larger tour that will see the show performed at rural venues and art centres around the country.
Elizabeth is a land girl, part of Britain's Women's Land Army. These were women who were left at home while their husbands, brothers and friends went off to war. They took over many of the jobs that were traditionally roles for men, and helped support Britain's war efforts through things like manufacturing and agriculture. The Women's Land Army were placed at farms all over rural England and they helped to ensure that there were enough workers to support an increase in food production to help keep the country fed.
No Finer Life explores the relationship with our land, the food it produces, and our own identity. It is based on a true story of a young farm girl who sets out in search of author George Henderson, whose book, The Farming Ladder, offered hope that farming could help support the country and its people in a time of great need.
Tickets for No Finer Life are available online or by calling the box office on 023 8066 7683. Tickets are £12 or £10 for concessions. The show is on Saturday February 24th at 7.30pm.
