The
Nuffield Southampton Theatres has long had a commitment to children's theatre. Their Saturday children's theatre has expanded with the opening of the City Studio, offering many productions on both Saturdays and Sundays to reach a wider young audience. The shows are chosen to introduce children to a wide range of performance styles, from high-end touring shows, to musical singalongs, or skilful puppetry. On Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of May the theatre will welcome musician
Nick Cope who can whip up a crowd of pre-schoolers with just a smile and a guitar in his show
.
Bespectacled Nick Cope has a gentle indie pop style and a calm voice, which tends to be a bonus for parents who can get a little overwhelmed with the loud technicolour pop that is often marketed to young kids. The songs deal with the usual problems and gripes faced by under 5s - things individuality, things you're scared of, foods you don't want to eat and sibling troubles - and then there's plenty of fun imaginative songs as well like songs about dragons and witches.
They're the types of songs children can dance around to and enjoy anyway, but if you do want to familiarise your kids with some of Nick Cope's songs you can check out his
YouTube channel which has plenty of songs to fill the day. Many of the videos have been illustrated by Cope and his son Burt. Or you can head head to the
online store on Cope's website where you'll find CDs and DVDs.
[BREAK] has been very popular with audiences at the Edinburgh Festival. The songs aren't just fun children's ditties, Cope has been a musician for over 20 years and he has a real talent and spirit that he beings to his music.
Tickets are £6 for adults and children and can be purchased from the
NST website . will be performed on Saturday 19th of May at 11am and 2pm at NST Campus, and on Sunday 20th of May at 11am and 2pm at NST City Studio.
