A big, lively urban farm for a family day out
Come meet the sheep

London's network of city farms are a brilliant, if slightly surreal, day out for city kids deprived of the chance to get up close and personal with a pig.

Or, in the case of Newham City Farm, a huge, affectionate shire horse called Blaze, sheep, pygymy goats, peacocks, alpacas, rabbits, chickens, geese and even birds of prey.

Just wandering round, seeing these animals in the flesh, and petting and feeding a few of the less dangerous ones, is enough to keep most children bemused and enthralled for several hours.

Entrance is free, and the farm is on the 262, 300 and 376 bus routes.

Owned and run by local charity, Community Links, the farm is meant as an educational establishment, and children will learn a lot about all the animals on show.

Honey made in the farm's own beehives, fresh eggs and even fresh manure (for gardeners) are available to buy.

A large playground at the back gives children the chance to run off any pent up energy. Free horse and cart rides around the farm run in the summer months.
