As a post-exam treat, I took my boyfriend to York to visit the National Railway Museum. The museum itself is very easy to find, and as soon as you pull in at the train station, there is appropriate signage to show you where to go.

For families, the museum is a perfect place to take the children for a weekend trip, especially those who are fans of Thomas the Tank Engine or are addicted to their electric train sets. The museum has everything from halls full of artifacts, workshops where the reconstruction of the trains can be viewed, to the main attraction itself: the trains. The trains on display are also very impressive, and the historians out there will especially love the trains used by various members of royalty.

Parents with children (and young adults in touch with their inner childish nature), there are miniature train rides available, one in a 'rocket' engine at £2, and a smaller track at £1. On a sunny day, these are brilliant fun.
