To paraphrase Dorothy: 'There is no place like London.' I hope I can convince you of that here. Also check out my blog at damselwithadulcimer.wordpress.com and my theatre reviews at www.playstosee.com

Almost Millions of Milkshakes at Mr Shakes
Amar Thakkar set up Mr Shakes in June last year for almost purely altruistic reasons: he was having to travel too far to enjoy a decent milkshake. The business is his baby, and he is its mother and father. The dark night club style décor is his personal design, from the dark granite flooring and counter top, through to the muted lighting and the high powered milk shake blenders that are built into the shop's counter.

He is incredibly fussy about the creaminess and thickness of the shakes on sale and the quality of ice cream that goes into them. The shelves are a witness to the amazing choice of flavours: I counted nearly 70 different chocolate bars, more than 20 biscuits and more than 30 sweets, as well as cakes, cereals and spreads. You can choose from Aero, Amaretti and Apple Straws right through to Yorkie, although there is nothing beginning with 'Z' … yet. Sauces and syrups cost a little more, as do toppings, supplements and extras.

To suit local tastes there are also specials on offer, including Falooda, Lassi, Kulfi and Chiku Milkshakes. And if you want something on the warm side, why not try a Hot Chocomel? Mr Shakes guarantees that this is the best hot chocolate in town.

I plumped for a Coffee Shake, made with a double espresso, and there was no mistaking that my daughter's Orange Wednesday (filled with Terry's Chocolate Orange and Jaffa Cakes) tasted just as it said on the tin. You could have recognised the orangey Jaffa Cake taste wearing a blindfold.

If you don't like milkshakes, you could opt for a healthier, and less calorific, smoothie. How does a Pineapple Power Punch sound? Or you could turn a shake into a sundae by adding whipped cream and a choice of toppings.

Drinks are currently £2.75 for a regular size and £3.50 for a large. Amar also told me that he will soon be setting up a home delivery service, so check with the website and Facebook page for updates.
