The time is nigh (as the saying goes) to get ready to take a positive step towards helping yourself get fitter and helping others get better by signing up for iconic night-time fundraising event The MoonWalk Scotland for 2019.

The MoonWalk Scotland is organised by the grant making charity, Walk the Walk , the UK's largest grant-making charity. Now in its 14th year, this iconic night-time fundraising event presents a fantastic opportunity for you to take part in Walk the Walk fulfilling its motto: Raise money, Raise awareness, Get fit and Have fun!

The MoonWalk Scotland sets out from Holyrood Park, Queens Drive, Edinburgh (EH8) at midnight on Saturday 8 June 2019. To join in the fun of the night you can choose from a selection of four different phases of the moon. The phases, distances, age groups and fees are:
  • New Moon, 6.55 miles, costs adults £32.50 and Young Walkers (10 to 12 years) £18 each;
  • Half Moon, 13.1 miles, costs everybody, with a minimum age of 13 years, £49.50;
  • Full Moon, 26.2 miles, costs everybody, with a minimum age of 13 years, £49.50; and
  • Over The Moon Ultra, 52.4 miles is £77.50 each with a minimum age of 18 years.

  • To register in your chosen moon phase click here and set up your account.

    By joining in on the night you will have the opportunity to fulfil your childhood wish of joining the circus. Come along and gather with all the other challengers in Walk the Walk's 'Big Top' sitting in the midst of Holyrood Park and you will become part of the circus. And remember the late, great David Niven's advice,%% "Keep the circus going inside you, keep it going, don't take anything too seriously, it'll all work out in the end."

    In addition to the registration fees, each walker is asked to help raise the much-needed funds to fight the cancer scourge by obtaining further sponsorships to mark their efforts on the night. Every adult joining the New Moon, Half Moon or Full Moon is asked to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship and the Young Walkers to see just how much they are able to raise.

    For those who are joining Over The Moon Ultra you obviously enjoy a challenge so your mission, once you have declared your intention, will be to raise a minimum of £350 in sponsorship – so get moving your good work will be very much appreciated!

    The MoonWalks are Walk the Walk's flagship events held annually in Scotland, London, and Iceland. The funds raised during these events are granted to aid in breast cancer research and help improve the lives of people who are living with the disease. As a result Walk the Walk has granted in excess of £30 million to Breast Cancer Now for a range of very specific research studies including the extremely important The Generation Study and extensive support for the very important tissue research being carried out by the Tissue Bank .

    Another important feature of The MoonWalk Scotland for all you parochialists is that, like what happens in Vega stays in Vegas, most of the money raised in Scotland, stays in Scotland. The most significant grants resulting from the MoonWalk Scotland are:

  • Maggie's Centres offering support to people diagnosed with all types of cancer, as well as emotional support for families which is done through funding centres at Gartnavel, Glasgow and the Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert and the Lanarkshire Centre in the grounds of Monklands Hospital in Airdrie;
  • The Breast Cancer Institute in Edinburgh for direct support of several major projects, including renovating the breast ward and Mammography Unit, as well as building a new operating theatre; as well as
  • Many other beneficiaries in Scotland and other parts of the UK that you can see here on the web page.

  • If you think you would be more help in providing assistant to the walkers than walking yourself then why not think about becoming a MoonWalk volunteer? Walk the Walk volunteers join in the fun and fulfil a most important function during every event. Volunteering enables you to share some incredibly humbling, rewarding and memorable experiences all experienced in the knowledge you are part of the mainstay of the events and the support many of the walkers will rely on during their challenges.
