York already has its own beauty and charm but internationally acclaimed artist Michael Lyon has added his own touch of flair with a major new exhibition. You'll find it all on show at York Art Gallery's Artists Garden, in the city centre.



The whole show is called Ancient and Modern and includes nine sculptures inspired by nature, myth and ancient cultures. In fact, the centre of the art display is dominated by 'Amphitrite' (1993), a large painted steel structure. This showcase is one not to be missed as this is Lyons' first and only major exhibition in York.



Becky Gee, curator of art at York Art Gallery, said: "Michael Lyons has shown his incredible work around the world and in some of the most respected art institutions here in the UK, but not on this scale in his home city before."



Sadly Michael Lyons, who worked in Cawood, North Yorkshire, died suddenly in April 2019. Before his death, he was quoted as saying 'To my knowledge, this is the first time such a large exhibition of outdoor sculpture has been shown in York – certainly for many years. It is a great pleasure to make a contribution to the cultural life of York in this way and I hope that the exhibition will help to make sculpture a more integral part of the city."
