What is the best way to combat the bitterly cold winter weather? Some fiery hot spicy food - and boy, do I have a recommendation for you.
Mezcal is probably the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, partly because I like the decoration, partly because it is in one of my favourite areas (Dalston, East London), but mostly because they serve damn fine authentic Mexican food.
Popping through the door of Mezcal cantina is like entering another world. You are presented with wall to wall decorations incorporating Mexican imagery - from Day of the Dead to sombreros via Mexican wrestling masks. Then there is the constant music, which moves from salsa through to mariachi. Then there's the food.
A look at the menu is to look at a list of temptations; the hardest choice is actually deciding what to leave off trying rather than choosing what you want to eat. My advice - arrive hungry, so you can fit more in.
To go with the food delight is the spirits list, as a look at the cocktails, and especially the selection of tequilas and mezcals available means having a beer, as nice as they are, doesn't really become an option.
Mezcal has brought fine Mexican food to the Dalston area since 2012, and long may it continue to do so, as this cantina is one you really want to keep finding your way back to - coming runner-up in the prestigious Latin Lukas Awards, an award for the promotion of excellence amongst the Latin community in London tells you exactly that.
One word of advice - go easy on the chilli if you are not used to it, you'll find it difficult to enjoy the subtle flavours if you have a tongue burn.
