Just a few steps away from the must-see Piccadilly sights of Fortnum and Mason, Green Park and the Royal Academy, is this elegant new hotel in London.
Adding even more glamour to The
Mayfair Townhouse is its link to writer Oscar Wilde and fellow dandies, as it was here in Half Moon Street that those bachelors would party at the Half Moon Pub.
Wilde even mentioned this street in his famous plays
The Importance of Being Earnest and
The Picture of Dorian Gray. So, what could feel more culturally decadent for a weekend break or stay in London?
The pub may be long gone but the grandeur of historic London remains at the Mayfair Townhouse, which is made up of 15 Georgian townhouses and only a couple of minutes walk from Green Park Underground Station in this fashionable neighbourhood.
It is an extension of the countryside chic seen at its sister hotels -
The Lygon Arms in the Cotswolds and Cliveden House - all owned by Iconic Luxury Hotels.
It's a respected group of hotels with the Lygon Arms a haunt for actors and royalty from Renee Zellwegger to Hugh Grant and the Queen's belated husband Prince Philip.
This latest hotel, which is pet-friendly, has been decorated in the spirit of the dandy with glamorous touches like artist Clarita Brinkerhoff's peacock made up of 25,000 Swarovski crystals in the lobby greeting visitors.
Across its 172 rooms and bar, there's a mix of Georgian and Victorian history with a modern twist. It could be a painting of poet Byron languishing with an iPad by artist Ant Fox or the golden fox-shaped door knockers on the rooms. Foxes are everywhere, as it's the hotel's mischievous motif.
The interior design was overseen by firm Goddard Littlefair, who have tied the series of Georgian buildings together combining contemporary British style with flamboyant, witty and chic touches, many related to literature and the arts.
Quirky, exciting art features everywhere throughout the hotel and that's because Minda Dowling, a leading art specialist, curated unique and unusual pieces for to make it feel even more special for discerning guests.
Every room and suite is unique in this carefully decorated listed building. It's chic with every modern comfort from huge monsoon showers to elegant lounging sofas. Everything has a distinct touch of luxury.
There are mounds of snacks waiting in your room in the complimentary minibar, gorgeous bath products and heated flooring in the bathrooms, while the beds are so snug you'll sleep off those busy days enjoying everything the capital has to offer.
The most opulent are the Skylight and Green Park Suites that have space and decadence for longer stays. Green Park in particular has wonderful views.
Food and drink is available in the flamboyant and stunning Dandy Bar that doubles up as a restaurant for casual dining for lunch or supper.
There's even a nod to Wilde and pals with a bright green Dandy Cocktail at this welcoming bar at the heart of the hotel. Definitely worth a try, maybe even while doing a toast to the iconic literary hero.
In the mornings, head downstairs to the elegant basement for the generous buffet breakfast platter and hot food menu ranging from a full English to pancakes. It's next to 'The Den' with its walls decorated with wily foxes. "
Mayfair is one of the most luxurious areas in London," explained the hotel's duty manager Matteo Flamigni. "
Oscar Wilde used to revel in this street, which is named after the local pub - The Half Moon House. This is where the bachelors came to party so there are lots of nods to dandies around the hotel. "We have a range of stylish rooms and suites that cater for various types of people that are all unique in their own way. We want to become known as the best townhouse in London."
Rooms start at £252 a night, suites from £660 and signature suites from £2,340 - all rooms only for two people. Visit the
Mayfair Townhouse website here for more booking information.
