Musical Honours South African Hero Who Fought Apartheid
The life of South African president and freedom fighter Nelson Mandela has been transformed into a musical tribute by the Cape Town Opera Company.

Audiences in the UK and Ireland including Cardiff, Dublin, London, Manchester and Birmingham will have a chance to see the show during a special brief tour of the UK from August to September.

The Mandela Trilogy, which is recommended for children aged at least 10 and older, is a large scale spectacular featuring a cast of more than 60 South African performers.

There is a range of music that accompanies the eventful life of Nelson Mandela as he makes the long walk to freedom, including jazz, swing, modern opera and even authentic Xhosa folk music.

Told in three parts, the show begins with tribal initiation rites on the banks of the Mbashe River and continues into rebellious jazz-fuelled days in Sophiatown.

Moving on to Mandela's jail term and his time for reflection on Robben Island, the story takes people on towards his eventual freedom and presidency when South Africa broke free of apartheid.

A Cape Town Opera spokesman said the musical has been written by two different composers so each act is in stark contrast to the others.

He added that they all have "an over-arching dramatic theme that shines a light on the life of an extraordinary man".

Mandela died in 2013 after becoming a worldwide icon in the fight against racism. The South African anti-apartheid revolutionary became South Africa's first Black president that had been chosen in a fully representative democratic election in 1994.
