At this time of year, the sweet smell of mulled wine and sizzling sausages can be smelled throughout Manchester city centre as the Christmas Markets hit town.

Each year they seem to get bigger and bigger as every cobbled street and square fills up with wooden huts adorned with fairy lights.

But local areas have their own home-grown equivalents, which are just as excellent and also chock-a-block with lovely crafts, yummy food and warming wine.

Try Altrincham's Twilight Christmas Market, for example. It will be running every Thursday from 5-9pm and you can pick up some lovely stuff from there. You'll find it in the town's historic covered market on Greenwood Street.

Or head South to the Didsbury Artisan Market, which will also be running every Thursday during the festive season, from 4-9pm, at the Didsbury Pub.

Not to be outdone, the hip and trendy area of Chorlton will be displaying the area's most creative, independent vendors, DJs, artists and chefs as they all come together on Sunday, December 16th for Chorlton Christmas Bazaar.

The Irish Club will be transformed into a festive market with crafts, secondhand and vintage clothes, records, jewellery and more. There are also food stalls, a Christmassy cocktail stand and DJs playing tunes all day.

So get out of the city and enjoy Christmas the suburban way!
