Roots music is to make a rare, if not unique, appearance at a local community church in the Staffordshire town of Tamworth as part of an innovative touring theatre programme. Acoustic roots duo
Mambo Jambo will be performing in St Francis Church in Masefield Drive, Leyfields, Tamworth, on Saturday 13 May aimed at providing an evening of 'feel good' music from around the world.
Mambo Jambo will be appearing in concert at St Francis Church from 7.30pm in the first show to be performed at the religious venue in association with Live & Local – a rural touring initiative which helps voluntary groups promote events in the heart of their communities. Tamworth Borough Council has teamed up with Live & Local for a major new project called Touring Theatre – part of the Arts in Unusual Spaces initiative funded by the local authority and Arts Council England.
Touring Theatre aims to bring a range of high-quality shows to the Tamworth the area in familiar but unusual community locations, such as St Francis Church, in a bid to increase opportunities for people to experience the arts in their local area. Mambo Jambo, comprised of musicians Pete and Frankie, promises to take audiences on an exciting and joyous musical journey, mixing styles and rhythms from around the world. They have performed and studied in Salvador in Brazil, and Havana in Cuba where they took part in concerts with established Cuban musicians. Their musical style, mixing world sounds with folk and jazz, is reflected in their repertoire that ranges from Latin & Caribbean New Orleans to Bluegrass and Balkan.
And, even though there are just two of them, they perform on more musical instruments than the average small orchestra. Pete performs on guitar, banjo, percussion, ukulele, accordion, and a traditional Cuban guitar called tres, while Frankie amuses herself on saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar, and percussion. Both members of the duo also share the vocal duties. Mambo Jambo are regulars at music festivals, appearing across the UK, and have also toured internationally. Tickets to see Mambo Jambo are priced at £5 and are available in advance from St Francis Church on 01827 65926, via the Tamworth Arts and Events
website , in person from Tamworth Information Centre in Marmion House, Lichfield Street, or by calling the Box Office on 01827 709618. A transaction fee of £1 is payable on all online and telephone bookings. The full programme of Touring Theatre shows is also available
online .
