Mae Ping have got a new tapas menu, which they have added alongside their main menu. They are small size dishes that can be served as either a starter or a main, and are perfect for sharing. From this menu, my dad was felt spoilt for choice, and ended up picking several things. One of them were crispy duck pancakes at £9.50. It is designed for two, but we shared the six pancakes between the for of us.
It was quite a fun dish because it is one you assemble your self. On one plate you are presented with thinly sliced pieces of crisp duck, sliced cucumber, baby spring onions, and a bowl of soy sauce; then you are given a basked filled with wanton pastry.
As this was our first time, it was a bit of an experiment on how best to fill it. My mum tried first, by heaping all the ingredients onto the pastry, then drizzling soy sauce, but it was so full that it could be rolled, and the sauce seeped out. Dad then corrected her, and said you spread the sauce first. He showed us how it should be done, and was a little more sensible with the filling (a first), so it could be rolled up properly.
The duck had a lovely crispy texture, but was tender at the same time; the sauce really brought out all the oriental flavours.
