When I first heard about Macmillan Cancer Support's swimming event in Tooting Bec, I thought it said take the 'Lilo Challenge'. That should be easy, I thought, but who is going to pay me to float about on a big inflatable bed in a swimming pool?
It didn't take me long to realise, however, that this challenge was going to be anything but easy. Far from sunbathing on a lilo, this fundraising event is actually a 'Lido Challenge'. A lido is a big outdoor swimming pool, and the one at Tooting Bec is the largest in the UK. You won't be enjoying the sun on your back either, because the Lido Challenge takes place on the 5th October. If you are looking to test yourself and don't mind chilling your nether regions in the name of charity, then you can sign-up for £15. You will swim twenty-two lengths of the ninety-one metre pool, bringing the challenge to a total of two kilometres. It is a real test of stamina so is only open to those 18 years old or over. Swim at your own pace, and with whichever stroke suits you best. Don't forget to invite your friends to cheer you on (and cough up their sponsorship money).
