Bath Abbey is right in the heart of Bath and at the moment, has a very special visitor. Floating magically in the centre of the nave is a magnificent, enormous moon. Lit from within and outside, this photo-realistic full moon hangs suspended over all visitors and it is breathtaking. The installation forms the centrepiece of the Christmas celebrations at the Abbey and all sorts of other events are taking place before the 25th. Happy Christmas!
This wonderful installation/sculpture is completely free to visit and can be enjoyed until Christmas Eve on the 24th. A permanent feature of the Abbey until then, it will remain in place throughout all opening hours, church services and events.
The moon is easily the size of a house and dominates the space in the central nave of the Abbey. It is massive and yet looks very serene and delicate. It is suspended from one wire, anchored in the roof. When we saw it today; it was gently revolving with beautiful organ recitals going on around it.
The moon itself is the be all and end all of the exhibition and so you can spend as little or as much time moongazing as you wish. We popped in to have a look before doing some Christmas shopping and spent a lovely half an hour enjoying the space.
The moon suits all age groups and is very child-friendly because it is completely silent. I saw many, many young visitors transfixed by the lights and the sheer size of the blue wonder.
Walking around the Abbey, the moon really does feel like it follows you and it is almost always visible around the building. As it is suspended, there are no boundaries or barriers, so you can get up close and personal with the moon. The quality of the design is superb and every crater looks almost eerily real!
