A couple of friends and I got together for a spot of girly gossip and tapas last night at Los Molinos in Hammersmith.
Family run since 1991 and tucked away near Brook Green, stepping through the doors felt a little like stepping into someone's warm, homely and wonderfully mediterranean, front room. The walls were filled with colourful ceramics, curios and historic photos and although the room was on the small side, the atmosphere remained cosy and vibrant, rather than crushed, as the restaurant filled.
Comfortably ensconsed by the cheery front window and sheltered from the Shepherds Bush Road drizzle outside, the three of us tucked into a bottle of Spanish red and proceeded to tackle traditional favourites like calamares, patattas brava and tortilla as well as some chicken croquettes, pimientos and a tuna and avocado salsa.
Dessert followed (of course!) and when we asked for the bill, out it came folded neatly between three complimentary glasses of liqueur, generating much debate about the flavour - was it almond or hazelnut?
The service was attentive and welcoming without being overbearing and nothing seemed too much trouble. Our lovely Spanish waitress even called upon a number of her colleagues to try to translate the name of the liqueur into English for us. Just as well their English is better than my Spanish!
So to sum up, friendly service, a great atmosphere and terrific food equals a truly wonderful combination and that means that Los Molinos makes into my Little Black Book of fabulous places to eat.
