'A Playground of Curiosities'

Fairgrounds are places full of wonder: dazzling lights, joyous music, hyperactive candy, and adrenaline rush rides. You can get all sorts of fairgrounds; there's your small local event that lasts for a couple of weeks, where you'll spend a couple of hours. Then there's your giant theme parks; a permanent fixture that has so much on offer that you need to book a holiday to do it justice.

The London Wonderground is somewhere in between. The five month festival at the Southbank Centre has something new everyday, but close enough to home that you can travel there daily. It also has that certain something that is hard to describe - bizarre, unusual, quirky, strange, take your pick.

The festival opens on the 7th May, and runs until the 28th September. In that time, you will not just get your typical fairground stalls and rides, but fantastic shows. For example, the opening act, LIMBO is a wild circus troupe that will whisk audiences away to a 'sinister netherworld'.

London Wonderland will officially open on the 9th with a Eurovision Special Gala full of cabaret acts. Another cabaret act you should look out for is Dr. Sketchy's Art School, in which you get the draw the performers.

There's plenty for kids too. They'll get to sing and dance in Ali McGregor's Jazzmatazz, Monski Mouse's Baby Disco, Shlomo's Beatbox Adventure, and Ready, Steady, Celidh!.
