I am a writer and teacher, out and about in the world but with Nottingham never far from my heart.

A photographic feast for the eyes
Without light there can be no photography; light has been woven into the very of fabric of the artistic medium since its inception in the 19th century. It's even there in the name: 'photo-graphy', derived from the Greek words for 'light' and 'drawing'.

It's this fundamental relationship that the Light in the Lens photography exhibition in Birmingham aims to highlight. Bringing together images by photographers from the world over, the exhibition's organisers hope to unite these works under a common, intrinsic theme: the transformative power of light.

One of the organisers, George Eastman, describes the theme in more detail;

"[Light] brings everything into sight, except itself," he explains. "As photographers we use light in our pictures to bring out character in portraits, the grain and texture in surfaces, and to concentrate our gaze within the frame. We use sunlight, firelight, candles and lamps to heighten the emotional impact."

Some of the artists featured in the exhibition include Moldovan photographer Diana Bodnarenco, Dovile Zubyte from Lithuania and Wu Hao from China. This multi-national element allows the exhibition to offer insight into how photographers use light and gradation of tone in different parts of the globe.

The exhibition is held at Fountain Court, Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham between February 18th and February 22nd 2015. Whether you're an enthusiastic photographer yourself, or simply interested in the aesthetics of photographic art, you're sure to find something to tantalize your optic nerve at the Light in the Lens exhibition.
