Thousands flock to city park to see welcome Proms return
Thousands of music lovers found something to celebrate as mass live events made a welcome return following 18 months of lockdown. To make the celebrations even better, the sun shone down on Beacon Park in Lichfield, Staffordshire, as the 22nd Lichfield Proms took to the open-air setting on Saturday 4th September. Around 9,000 people descended on Beacon Park to enjoy the return of Lichfield District Council's free annual Proms.
The end-of-summer event featured music from Eureka Jazz and a concert by the British Police Symphony Orchestra, who have been welcomed back to Lichfield Proms over a number of years.
Eureka Jazz played music from the Great American Songbook as proms-goers found their spaces within the picturesque setting of Beacon Park. Their performance led up to the British Police Symphony Orchestra taking to the stage at 7.30pm. The orchestra, conducted by Richard Jenkinson, was joined by experienced compere, Danny Mizon and guest singers, Claire Prewer and Anando Mukerjee.

The programme included themes from 2001 Space Odyssey, James Bond and Monty Python's Flying Circus, as well as a medley from The Sound of Music, Nessun Dorma, the Love Duet from Madam Butterfly and more. The evening ended with everyone on their feet, waving their Union Flags to the proms anthems, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory, to a firework finale overhead.
Councillor Iain Eadie, the council's Cabinet member responsible for Parks & Leisure, said: "It was such a fantastic evening and wonderful to be outside with so many members of our community, celebrating together. It was a joy to see everyone having a great time, waving their flags and enjoying the music and the atmosphere. Thank you to all the team who worked so hard over the year to organise Lichfield Proms, to all the sponsors who help support this spectacular event, and to the brilliant musicians for entertaining us. We must also thank our volunteers who helped us on the night and with the clean-up."
