Monthly Movie Night Portrays Story Of US Sports Scandal
Get your skates on and zoom over to the Lichfield Garrick theatre in Staffordshire for the next instalment of the venue's new monthly film nights. The Garrick continues its Big Screen Blockbuster Nights with the recently released, critically acclaimed and multi-award winning I, Tonya, which will be screened on Saturday 21 July in the theatre's main auditorium. Starring Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney, this biographical film recaptures one of sports greatest and most controversial rivalries which shocked the world of ice skating, and sport in general, in the 1990's.
In 1991, talented figure skater Tonya Harding, played by Robbie, becomes the first American woman to complete a triple axel during a competition. But, three years later, in 1994, her world comes crashing down when her ex-husband (Stan) conspires to injure her rival and fellow Olympic hopeful Nancy Kerrigan in a poorly conceived attack that forces the young Tonya to withdraw from the US national championship. Tonya Harding's life and legacy instantly become tarnished as she is forever associated with one of the most infamous scandals in sports history.

At the 90th Academy Awards, Allison Janney, who played Tonya's mother, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, while the film also earned nominations for Best Actress for Margot Robbie and Best Editing. I, Tonya also earned three nominations at the 75th Golden Globe Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress for Janney and was nominated for five awards at the 71st British Academy Film Awards with Janney again winning an award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. As well as the big screen being a draw to audiences, the Lichfield Garrick theatre will be offering popcorn, hot dogs, nachos and sodas in its Green Room Bar and Cafe, making sure that patrons don't miss out on the full cinema experience.
