New Afternoon Concert Series Launches With Mozart
Fans of classical music are about to be in for a regular and welcome treat in Staffordshire with the launch of a new series of classical concerts at the Lichfield Garrick theatre. The new classical series of concerts, which will all take place in the afternoon, gets underway this Sunday, April 23rd, with a performance of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet and Crusell Quartets.
Historical researcher and musician Jane Booth joins Ensemble DeNote to perform Mozart's acclaimed Clarinet Quintet for the inaugural concert. She will be playing a basset clarinet similar to the instrument used in the first performance of the piece in 1789.
Jane Booth to star in Garrck's first afternoon classical concert
The Clarinet Quintet by Mozart is instantly recognisable as one of the composer's finest works, with the use of the basset clarinet said to bring out some of the richness and depth which is lost in adaptations for the modern clarinet. The piece will then be followed by the Crusell Quartet. Crusell, a contemporary of Mozart, was an early clarinet virtuoso. Jane Booth is an internationally renowned performer and musicologist, working with the Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Tafelmusik. She is currently researching the clarinet music of Crusell, so classical music lovers attending the Lichfield Garrick concert can look forward to a musical and historically performed concert of the beautiful Quartets.

Executive Director of the Lichfield Garrick, Karen Foster, who previously toured internationally with professional orchestras, said: "I have known Jane Booth's playing for many years and I know that this will be a superb concert. Jane's mellifluous tone, musicality, and in-depth knowledge of the style and techniques of this period will bring a historically accurate and fresh feel to this timeless music.
Don't miss one of our foremost clarinetists performing gems from the classical era." The Mozart Clarinet Quintet and Crusell Quartet performance will be at the Lichfield Garrick on Sunday 23 April at 3pm. Tickets are £20 and £15 (students). The theatre is also arranging pre-show afternoon tea in its Green Room Bar and Café. Tickets are available online or by calling the box office on 01543 412121.
