Folk singer Lewis Barfoot will showcase songs from her new EP, The Old Bog Road, when she performs at Birmingham’s Kitchen Garden Cafe on November 12, 2024.

The EP is a collection of acapella traditional folk songs from Ireland and the UK that explore the themes of love, longing and lament. It was partly inspired by songs Lewis learnt while working with the elderly community in Dunmanway Hospital, West Cork.

The concert will also include tracks from Lewis’s two albums, Glenaphuca (2021) and Home (2023). She describes Glenaphuca (the name of her grandmother’s farm in East Cork) as a folk prayer to her ancestors, and the theme continued on Home, where she highlighted the lives and sufferings of the women of her family.

Born in London and now based in her maternal home of Cork, Lewis blends ethereal vocals with original compositions and reimagined traditional songs from her dual heritage. Accompanying herself on nylon string guitar and shruti box (similar to a harmonium), with live vocal loops, she creates a rich, immersive soundscape. She is frequently compared to the likes of Kate Rusby, Sandy Denny, Eddie Reader and Maíre Brennan.

The date at the Kitchen Garden Cafe in the Birmingham suburb of Kings Heath is part of an 11-date solo UK tour that opens at The Green Note in London on November 7. On November 9 she will make a guest performance at the London Welsh Centre with Welsh Male Voice choir Côr Meibion Gwalia who will join her onstage for a few songs.
