In a world full of supermarkets that offer the earth, but are in reality very similar, any new independent venture has to be applauded. If that venture is a bakery, a place that focuses on doing one department of a supermarkets job - just very, very well - well that deserves a review...

Lucky people of Putney then - because it is you who have Lazaro .

Lazaro is an artisan bakery located within footsteps from the station, and offering a world of choice in that most essential of food staples - bread.

How good are they? Well, they won an award for London's Best Bakery this year - first prize no less - so I think that more than answers that question. They also make things you really want to try, whether conventional (bloomers and brioche), or not so (snowman poo and chocolate bacon brownies).

Now you probably expect that the word 'artisan' actually reads as 'expensive' - don't be fooled. The prices are reasonable, while the quality is high. The displays are tempting too - with the wares shown off in rustic woven baskets arranged around the store, as well as artistically arranged table displays and counters. You will find it almost impossible to leave here without buying something, of that I am almost certain.

So, should you be thinking of starting off the New Year with a slight modification to your diet, why not treat yourself to some real fresh bread, baked with all the patience and dedication you would expect from an artisan bakery?
