While much of the UK will be glued to their televisions to watch the Coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey in London, people in Staffordshire are being invited to take part in a special royal fun run instead. Entrants are being urged to sign up for either a 2 kilometre or 5 kilometre run taking place on the grounds of
Tamworth Castle on Saturday 6 May. There will be an accessible three-lap route around the Castle Grounds for the 5k run, which is aimed at everyone over the age of 12, and a 2k run aimed at children under 12. The shorter distance starts at 10am with the longer race setting off an hour later - around the time that the major royal event gets underway in the capital.
The fun run has been organised by
Tamworth Borough Council as one of a number of events to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III and his wife, Camilla, the Queen Consort. Registrations have begun for the two races, which are open to serious runners, walkers, plodders, children and anyone who likes a challenge in the great outdoors. The two fun runs are taking place as part of a packed weekend of events organised by Tamworth council's arts and events team. While entry for the runs is free, participants need to register online at regevent.co.uk by May 4. Anyone over the age of four can take part, but under 11s need to be within arm’s reach of a parent or guardian at all times.
Celebrate the King's Coronation with a special fun run
Organisers say they are pulling out all the stops to help celebrate the Coronation, with parties, events and fun throughout the extended weekend including live outdoor performances, storytelling, puppetry, magician shows, cinema at Tamworth Assembly Rooms, community sports events, The Big Lunch, outdoor inflatable obstacle course from The Realm, Hamsterzorb and cream teas! Families are also invited to take part in a free piggyback race and tug of war in the Castle Grounds on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May.
Anica Goodwin, Executive Director of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “
The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort is going to be a huge country-wide celebration and we are making sure Tamworth is joining in with a packed weekend of sport and entertainment. The fun runs for the Coronation are free to enter, and people of all fitness levels and abilities are invited to take part. Having a separate run for children means it will be something the whole family can get involved in. We’d warmly invite people to sign up for the run, or just come and cheer people on, and then join us for an afternoon of fun.”
The event will take place in the grounds of medieval Tamworth Castle
