Famous for its many curry houses, Brick Lane is a very popular destination for a taste of the East. But amongst the parade of Indian restaurants, you can find the odd place that breaks away from the lane's reputation – one of which is Thai restaurant Kinkao.
Kinkao prides itself on its traditional Thai food using only fresh ingredients, herbs and spices. The mouth-watering smells greet you as soon as you enter the restaurant and after being shown to my table by a polite, friendly waitress, I immediately had a good feeling about the place. The interior is beautifully decorated, with striking wooden carved furniture, creating an authentic Thai atmosphere to compliment the appetising aromas wafting from the kitchen.
The menu offers a range of tasty-sounding dishes, from soups to curries, noodles and stir-fries, but you are unlikely to be disappointed whatever you decide to go for. I chose the chicken Kaeng Massamun – a mild curry cooked in a rich coconut sauce with potatoes and peanuts, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavours were sweet and delectable and I really had to resist the urge to gobble down the whole dish in one go. At a reasonable price of £8.95, it is well worth the money, although this doesn't include the side dish of rice which you have to order separately.
Between myself and my six friends, we sampled all kinds of curries, soups, noodles, grilled and wok dishes, and each one of us left feeling more than satisfied and extremely delighted with our meals.
This was undoubtedly the best Thai food I have had in a long while and highly recommend it. So next time you fancy dinner on Brick Lane, why not make a change from the curry houses and try some exquisite traditional Thai food at Kinkao!
