To paraphrase Dorothy: 'There is no place like London.' I hope I can convince you of that here. Also check out my blog at and my theatre reviews at
Discover the Roots of Rock 'n' Roll at Kennedy's
Ask any pop or rock star or band member who inspired them and their music and you can bet they will often cite influences dating back several decades so don't dismiss your mum's or your gran's favourite singers: you might be pleasantly surprised if you listen to them and find that you want to get up and dance yourself.

For a far more immersive experience you could always treat yourself to a Jump Jive and Shout night at Kennedy's Bar in Islington where retro is de rigeur. Every month Jeniffer Jackson puts vinyl onto the turntable, drops the stylus into the groove and escorts you back in time to the 1940s and 1950s to help you discover the roots of rock 'n 'roll. A mixture of boogie woogie, rhythm ' n 'blues, doo wop and jump jive will fill in the gaps of your musical history; it will also be useful to learn a few jive or jitterbug moves.

Discover, or rediscover, music by Louis Jordan, Little Richard and Lavern Baker (and those are only the 'L's). If the recorded music doesn't move you from your seat to your feet, the live performers are guaranteed to have you up and dancing when they take to the stage after 9.30pm. You'll enjoy yourself even more if you dress up for the period: there are no strict rules just think 1940s, '50s or '60s. Catch up with some old movies for further inspiration if you're stuck.
