Joining together to remember loved ones
Families across Birmingham and the West Midlands are invited to join John Taylor Hospice's Light up a Life a special event of remembrance.

Featuring music, readings and a moment of silence as a tree full of lights is illuminated, Light up a Life is dedicated to loved ones who have died. Taking place at the Hollyfields Centre in Woodacre Road, Erdington on Sunday 11 December at 6pm, all families are welcome to take part and there is no entrance charge.

Light up a Life also offers the opportunity to make a dedication in memory of loved ones by adding their names and a personal message to a Book of Remembrance which is available for viewing at the event and afterwards at the hospice in Erdington.

Event organiser Helen Cotter, who is spiritual care lead at John Taylor Hospice, says: "Light up a Life is a special time for families and friends to come together and remember their loved ones. It's an opportunity for us to reflect and shine a light for those who we love and miss. We hope that many people will join us on 11 December for what promises to be a very moving occasion."

Former teacher Gwen Stead and her family will be attending the event for the fourth time. Gwen's son Glyn was cared for in John Taylor's In-Patient Unit and died in February 2009, aged 29.

Gwen, aged 77, says: "The hospice staff were absolutely wonderful and the support and care for Glyn never faltered. He was never on his own and he died surrounded by family. He was such a character - he just loved sports, racing cars, skiing, kickboxing, you name it. Like the rest of our family he loved to travel too. Light up a Life is very special to me as it makes me feel nearer to Glyn. As a family we dedicate a light on the tree so our memories shine on and we celebrate the happiness that he brought into our lives."
