Northern Ireland singer Naomi Hamilton – aka
Jealous of the Birds – begins a short English tour at Birmingham's
Sunflower Lounge on November 12, 2018. The tour continues with shows in Nottingham and Manchester before concluding at
The Islington in London on November 15.
Naomi will be celebrating the release of her new EP,
The Moths of What I Want Will Eat Me in My Sleep, – the title is a line from one of her poems. The record includes the single
Plastic Skeletons and four cuts from
Parma Violets, her debut album, –
Miss Misanthrope,
Trouble in Bohemia,
Tonight I Feel Like Kafka and
Russian Doll – retooled and re-mixed by Ben Baptie.
Naomi has been making waves in the indie music scene since her 2015 debut EP,
Capricorn, which she recorded while studying English and Creative Writing at Queen's University, Belfast. Following the 2016 release of
Parma Violets, she performed at the
SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, an event that would ultimately lead to her signing with the
Canvasback/ Atlantic Records label.
Recalling the festival appearance, Naomi says: "
We were playing a Northern Ireland showcase at the British music embassy. It was just a solo, acoustic show and I had crazy jet lag and flu. It was a short set but I threw in a cover of Nirvana's Heart-Shaped Box and it just so happened that Nirvana's publicist during the In Utero period was in the crowd."
He was so impressed with what he saw that he tipped off Canvasback, who ending up signing her for releases in the United States. Indie imprint
Hand in Hive handles her UK releases.
Explaining her latest single, Naomi says: "
Plastic Skeletons was written once I got back from SXSW in 2016. That was my first trip to America and I bought a journal and wrote a bunch of stuff in it. When I got home, I went through it and wrote that song in full. It's a collection of little words and images that I picked up."
