Situated in the bustling heart of Oxford's Headington is Jacobs and Field. Cafe, Restaurant, Deli and Grocer they offer something for everyone.
Back in the 1880's the site was originally a market garden before a shop was built. It has been many things since but has returned to it's roots. The inspiration for the name Jacobs and Field came from the names of two early nurserymen at the market garden.
The awning, pavement tables and old fashioned wheelbarrow displaying fresh carrots complete with their tops attracted me in for a visit.
Inside, the shop is not old fashioned at all but bursting with character. Colourful bunting, rustic wooden crates displaying wares and an eclectic mix of mismatched furniture all help to create the atmosphere.
I decided to rest my weary feet with a cup of tea and lemon and poppyseed muffin. Both were lovely. The muffin had just the right amount of zesty zing contrasted with a drizzle of sweet icing on top. The tea was served in a satisfyingly large J&F mug with a really cute mini milk bottle on the side. The cafe/restaurant has a wide range of sandwiches which are made to order and can be eaten in or taken out. On the day I visited they seemed to be doing a steady trade of both.
From my seat I had a good view of everything around me. The Grocer side of the business had lots of local seasonal vegetables displayed in crates. Local free range eggs are stacked up by the deli at £1.95 for a half dozen. You can even buy olive oil and vinegar on tap, either bring your own bottle to be extra environmentally friendly or use one of theirs.
Jacob's and Fields are family friendly too and welcome all ages. My only struggle was that there's not a huge amount of room between the tables and I struggled a bit getting in a pram and not getting in everyone's way.
Jacobs & Field are open everyday from 9am to 6pm but they're also available for private hire in the evenings and outside catering. If you're a little further away you could always try a bespoke hamper. Check out their website for more details.
Jacob's and Fields were also the proud winners of The Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards 2012 in the Express/Deli/Cafe class. If you're in Headington, stop by and judge for yourself.
