Established in late 2014,
IST IST have a fierce DIY work ethic and have been compared favourably with
Joy Division ,
Interpol and
Editors . They released their debut album,
Architecture, in the midst of the pandemic on their own label, Kind Violence Records. Second album,
The Art of Lying, was released in November 2021, peaking at number 87 in the UK Top 100 and establishing the band as one of the leading lights of the Manchester music scene.
Their much-anticipated third album,
Protagonists, was made available on March 31 this year, with its dark, character-driven songs hitting the right chord with record buyers. It achieved IST IST’s highest chart rating – number 2 in the independent chart, number 6 in the vinyl chart, number 10 in the physical album sales chart and number 41 in the overall album sales chart for the UK.
As well as the current batch of UK headline shows the current line-up of frontman Adam Houghton, bassist Andy Keating, drummer Joel Kay and keyboardist and guitarist Mat Peters will perform a set at this year’s
Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival in Whitby on April 29.
Alongside the album, IST IST have also confirmed news of another exciting venture – a brand new community studio. Acting in response to the recent closure of Manchester’s Brunswick Mill rehearsal spaces, a facility used by IST IST since 2018, the band quit their day-jobs and decided to establish their own rehearsal rooms. Located on the third floor at Nile Mill A in Oldham, KVR Studios boasts nine rehearsal rooms and a photo studio big enough for photo and video shoots.
Andy Keating says: “
This is the second time we've been in this situation, as I'm sure a lot of other bands have been. Instead of becoming a tenant elsewhere, and potentially having to share a room with other bands which brings its own logistical headaches, we decided to establish KVR Studios, named after our label, Kind Violence Records. We want our space to be somewhere where bands and artists want to hang out and for it to be an aspirational place to rehearse, write and create.”
